Hello there,
I took the course Learning How To Learn in 2019. Since then, the way I learn has changed for good. And I understand how my brain works now, which is enabling more effective learning.
I wanted to refresh my knowledge of them so I started the course all over again. What stood out immediately as I started was the concept of focus and a diffuse mode of thinking.
As Barbara Oakley explained,
Focus mode of thinking is when you concentrate intently on something you're trying to learn or to understand. And this method is effective for things we know already.
To learn something new, we need to turn on our diffuse thinking mode.
“Diffuse thinking is a more relaxed thinking style and is related to a set of neural resting states.” That is, diffuse thinking happens when you let your mind wander freely, making connections at random.
This was interesting because growing up, we’ve been made to believe that thinking happens when we seat on a spot and read a book cover to cover. It’s not so. As the course later explained, even while we sleeping or taking a nap, the brain is at work making sense and connections from different phenomenons we’ve exposed it to.
The advantage that comes with knowing how to learn is that you become a better learner. And in a world where knowledge is quick to go obsolete, what better skill can you have than knowing exactly how to learn. Start the course now on Coursera.
Tweet of the week
Losing money can be painful. But it is less painful if you expected it. It is more painful and even unintelligent to lose money when you don’t expect to lose it. It signals a couple of things including that you have put your money in a thing you do not understand. Beware.
Best of What I Read
What is a Smart Contract? - If you have wondered a lot about this question, then this one article is all you need to read to get a working knowledge of what smart contract is all about.
Dips Happen. How To Deal With It - In this article, Risevest talks about how dips are feature of investing in the stock market and not a bug. And more importantly, they shared an interesting way to look at all dips plus what they are doing despite the dips.
34 Lessons From A 34 Years Old - Please read this. It’s a thread on Twitter. Let me share with you some of my favourites:
Do whatever you want and be unique. Hold onto that. Society will smugly and confidently try to rip that piece of your soul. But it'll be slow and gradual, and always seem reasonable and rational in the moment. Rebel against this. Fuck the world.
Build gloriousness with your career and your life. Screw living a pleasant middle class life. I support that life for most people, but if you're reading this tweet then you know you're built for more. Rise.
Value family above all. Help your genes survive. Your family may suck. But if they don't, value them greatly. It's your blood. And they love you, so love them back. One day they'll be gone.
Alright, go and read it all.
Thank you,
Until next week.
