Hello there,
I enjoy sharing things about career because I figure that for the majority of the subscribers, three things matters a lot at this moment; career, finance and relationship. And often, career is a great determinant of the other two. So allow me to share something yet again about career.
Take the shot but don’t stop developing yourself
See this (it’s a tweeter link you may need VPN):
I believe the message there is simple. Some of you self-disqualify yourself. Let that stop being you from today. Never disqualify yourself again. As long as you are working hard to develop yourself, you are worthy of all opportunity and until you find someone that will agree with you on that point, don’t stop.
On my current job, I was interview for a role but I was given another one because, well they perceived I was more fit for that one. Imagine, if I had self-disqualify. Just stop that practice today and start taking bold steps.
Hard work has no substitute

What exactly do successful people do to move up quickly in their careers? Shivani Berry got to chat with Aarthi Ramamurthy to learn how she did it. Her Rockstar career includes hosting the hottest show in tech, leading international at @Clubhouse, working at Facebook, Netflix & more. Here are 5 strategies she used to build her career:
Get out there & talk to people: Aarthi’s network is wide b/c for years she attended every event she could with the goal of meeting folks. The people she had coffee with 10 years ago are now doing amazing things, and she’s been able to stay connected with them. “Ignore the noisy part of your head and just go out there and do it. A lot of people just don’t even put themselves out there, but if you’re not, you’ll never make the connections.”
Do the hard things: Aarthi had to wind down her co, but that failure gave her perspective. “You feel like you can tackle everything!” All the hardships helped her learn how to stand back up & move on. “Building that backbone & that muscle helps you navigate other things.”
Find opportunities to learn: while at Netflix, Aarthi knew how to build really good products, lead teams, & ship software, but she didn’t know how to fundraise, recruit, or sell. She started her own company because she wanted to learn new things. It was worth it, even if she failed.
Be true to you: when Aarthi moved to the US, people told her to lose her accent because it was too pronounced. They wanted her to blend in. But that wasn’t her. “You should push yourself to grow & develop, but at the end of the day, if it doesn’t feel true to yourself, it shows.”
Make it work: Aarthi talks here about work-life balance now that she’s the parent of a toddler: “There’s no such thing as work-life balance!”
I found the list challenging and instructive. I am definitely taking action on all of these and you should to. I also once said this:
No matter how good you are, one of the things you can do to render yourself quickly useless is a wrong choice of career.
And no matter how worse you are, one of the things you can do to help you accelerate fast is the right choice of career.
The irony, not a lot people give much thought to career choice.
Be different.
See you next week.
